Preventing Future Medicaid Fraud in Nebraska

In what may be the largest example of medicaid fraud in Nebraska’s history, investigators missed red flags that could’ve potentially saved millions. Now, the state wants to make sure it never happens again.

Two weeks ago we told you about Lincoln pharmacist Scott Tran who plead guilty to stealing more than 14 million medicaid dollars to fuel his gambling addiction.

“This was a man very deliberately defrauding our program and was using very sophisticated means to do so,” said Medicaid Director Calder Lynch.

The state saw red flags in 2011, but despite concerns a state investigator says Tran’s documentation looked legitimate, down to changes in handwriting. Now, that’s more difficult to fake in 2015.

“We’re committed and focused to making sure we have better processes and better technology and better tools to root out fraud and abuse,” said Lynch.
