South Texas women plead guilty in healthcare fraud scheme

McALLEN — Two Mission women pleaded guilty in connection with a 12-count indictment accusing them and several others of federal healthcare fraud totaling nearly $5 million, according to court records.Veronica Vela, 42, and Cynthia Lee Zapata, 50, appeared in federal court Thursday as part of an agreed deal between federal prosecutors and the women, court records show.Vela and Zapata, who were arrested in early June 2015 as part of the nationwide crackdown on federal insurance fraud, pleaded guilty to one count each of attempt and conspiracy to commit mail fraud, according to court records.
