Top staffer leaves AG’s office citing family medical emergency

AUSTIN – After just more than a month on the job, embattled Attorney General Ken Paxton’s chief of staff, Hiram Sasser is leaving the agency, according to an internal email sent Tuesday.

The email from First Assistant Attorney General Jeff Mateer, obtained by The Dallas Morning News, said that Sasser was leaving because of a “family medical emergency.” Marc Rylander, the AG’s spokesman, said in a text message that a press release about position changes in the office would be issued Wednesday. Sasser, a top litigator at the conservative nonprofit law firm the Liberty Institute, was hired in April, and Paxton said he would serve for at least 90 days.
