The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently released dozens of federal and local criminal charges that address a mass of healthcare fraud schemes. The department has named 78 defendants that allegedly took advantage of at-risk individuals, using patient access to the Medicare insurance program to defraud the federal government of a combined $2.5 billion.
Current healthcare executives, doctors, and other licensed medical professionals make up the list of defendants, and charges range from offering phony prenatal care services to illegally diverting thousands of dollars worth of opioids and HIV medications.
“The Justice Department will find and bring to justice criminals who seek to defraud Americans and steal from taxpayer-funded programs,” Attorney General Merrick Garland stated
