A key legislator with oversight of the state’s Health and Human Services Commission has asked that agency’s Office of Inspector General to review all Medicaid fraud cases handled by an actuary who admitted recently to falsifying numbers on at least one of the cases.
State Rep. Richard Peña Raymond, D-Laredo, said the request was in response to an American-Statesman article last week revealing that Brad Nelson, a senior actuary working on Medicaid fraud cases, had been fired for manipulating statistics crucial to its investigation of Austin dentist Rachel Trueblood. While the agency initially had accused her of bilking the government out of $16.2 million in unnecessary procedures and improper charges, this summer it settled for only $39,000 one day after Nelson was fired. Trueblood, who wasn’t informed of Nelson’s sacking, admitted no fault but agreed to leave the Medicaid program.
