This small Mexican town becomes a dental destination as US healthcare costs soar

PHOENIX — Approximately three hours southwest of Phoenix, the small Mexican town of Los Algodones is making a big impact on American healthcare consumers seeking affordable alternatives to skyrocketing U.S. medical costs.

With a population of just 5,000 residents, Los Algodones has earned the nickname “Molar City” for its concentration of dental clinics and pharmacies catering to American patients. More than 1.3 million Americans seeking medical, dental, or specialized care traveled to Mexico in 2025, according to Border Report, with that number expected to rise in 2026 as health insurance premiums have essentially doubled for the same coverage.
