Researchers study regenerative dentistry to help teeth heal themselves with cells and proteins

Researchers are studying regenerative dentistry, a field focused on helping teeth repair themselves using special cells and proteins instead of relying on synthetic materials like traditional fillings.

“Today’s fillings work well, but they don’t last forever. Many people need them replaced over time. Researchers want treatments that restore the tooth instead of simply patching the damage. That could mean fewer repeat procedures and healthier teeth over the long term,” said Dr. Abinash Achrekar.

Scientists are also exploring ways to replace lost teeth. “Dental implants are a great option today, but they’re still artificial. Scientists are learning from animals that naturally grow new teeth, like sharks and pigs. They’ve already grown early tooth structures in the lab, and one day they hope to grow a real replacement tooth using a person’s own cells,” Achrekar said.
