Massachusetts has become the first U.S. state to require and enforce dental insurance rebates, ordering six insurers to return a combined US$8.4 million to consumers after they failed to meet the state’s dental loss ratio standard.
The rebates form part of US$14.5 million that nine health and dental insurers must return to hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts consumers and businesses, the state’s Division of Insurance announced Aug. 6.
Under Massachusetts law, commercial dental insurers must spend at least 83 per cent of adjusted premium revenue on patient care and certain quality-improvement activities. Insurers that fall below the threshold must return a portion of their premiums to consumers.
