Three-quarters of all dentists in the U.S. work in a dental practice that only has one location, according to data from the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute.
Four out of every 10 dentists work in a practice that is one location with multiple dentists and 35% of dentists work in a single location, solo dentist.
Working in a practice that is between 50 and 99 locations is the least common practice size, with 2% of dentists.
The ADA’s report reflects 2023 information and includes analysis of more than 193,000 practicing dentists.
Here is a breakdown of the percentage of dentists that work in six different practice sizes:
One location and one dentist: 35%
One location and two or more dentists: 40%
Two to nine locations: 10%
10 to 49 locations: 3%
50 to 99 locations: 2%
100 or more locations: 10%
