Researchers at the University of Rochester’s Eastman Institute for Oral Health have received a five-year, US$3.1-million grant to develop an artificial intelligence-powered platform for detecting and predicting oral disease outside traditional dental clinics.
The project is funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Researchers will advance a technology called SMARTeeth++, which combines portable intraoral imaging, AI analysis and patient health information to assess signs of tooth decay and early-stage gum disease.
The team also plans to develop predictive models that combine findings from oral images with other patient information to determine who may be at greatest risk of disease progression and require earlier intervention.
