DentaQuest Provider Audit Practices Under Scrutiny

Concerns are being raised about DentaQuest’s audit practices in the Texas Medicaid dental program, with some providers and attorneys questioning whether the process is fair, transparent, and functioning as intended.

Austin administrative attorney Jason Ray, who represents healthcare providers in Medicaid matters, says he is seeing an increasing number of dentists facing significant DentaQuest audits.

High error rates challenged

According to Ray, some providers who challenge audit findings are being assessed with extraordinarily high error rates, in some cases reportedly reaching 95% to 98%.

The concerns extend beyond the audits themselves.

Appeals process frustration

Ray says providers are frustrated with the appeals process, describing situations in which they believe they have had little opportunity to effectively contest the findings. He characterized the current system as problematic and unfair.

While audits are a routine part of Medicaid program integrity efforts, overly aggressive audits create unwarranted financial stress for practices already operating on thin margins. Recoupments, documentation disputes, and prolonged appeals place significant strain on offices serving large numbers of Medicaid patients.

Parent company dissatisfied with results

The concerns come as DentaQuest’s Canadian parent company, Sun Life Financial, continues to face financial challenges within its U.S. dental business. Since acquiring DentaQuest for approximately $2.5 billion in 2022, Sun Life has repeatedly reported pressure on dental earnings tied to Medicaid enrollment changes, higher claims costs, and reimbursement negotiations with states.

Gathering information from providers

Ray says he is currently gathering information from providers who have experienced DentaQuest audits and is particularly interested in reviewing audit letters and other documentation.

He indicated that he has already heard from several providers but is seeking additional examples to better understand the scope of the issue.

Providers who believe they have experienced problematic audit practices should contact Jason Ray directly to discuss their situation and determine what information may be useful for review.
