In an unapologetic presentation to city officials, Dan Sellers, chief financial officer of Marion County’s public health agency, defended his agency’s practice of exploiting loose rules to legally divert federal Medicaid dollars from its 78 nursing homes.
Sellers told the Indianapolis City-County Council’s Municipal Corporations Committee that Health & Hospital Corp. of Marion County’s nursing home system has provided exceptional care in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed 419 residents at the facilities.
Despite the agency’s assurances that the homes were in good hands, members of the committee asked sometimes sharp questions. One called for an independent audit of the organization’s nursing home system. Another quoted the city’s ethics code and asked how the agency would restore the public’s trust.
