How much does Medicaid cost in Texas?

A combined $58.4 billion in state and federal spending in fiscal year (FY) 2023, the most recent data available. A health insurance program for low-income individuals, Medicaid is jointly funded by both levels of government, with the federal government covering 65.2% of the spending and Texas’s state government covering 34.8%. The cost came out to $1,900 per enrollee or $2,200 for every Texas resident.

In FY 2022, the latest year of data available, Medicaid accounted for 39.97% of Texas’s budget (this includes federal funding), higher than the 28.81% average among all states.

The $894 billion spent on Medicaid in FY 2023 was the most since the program was created in 1965. FY 2023 spending was up 3.3% over the previous year.
