A medical biller in the Detroit area was sentenced June 30 to 50 months in prison for her role in a $7.3 million healthcare fraud scheme, according to the Department of Justice.

In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Sean F. Cox of the Eastern District of Michigan ordered 56-year-old Dawn Bentley and her co-defendants to pay $3.25 million in restitution.

In January, Ms. Bentley was convicted of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, wire fraud and mail fraud, as well as one count of mail fraud. According to evidence presented at trial, she submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare and Medicaid for services she knew had not been provided.
