Who are “Medicaid people” ? During a recent meeting of the Tompkins county legislature, Lansing representative Mike Sigler stated his opposition to a statewide single-payer health insurance plan by commenting, “I work hard for my health insurance,” and adding, “Medicaid people are getting charged all the time with fraud.”Medicaid people? A definition is in order. Medicaid is government-run health insurance for people who would otherwise have none. Perhaps Sigler is referring to the thousands of homeless people who were recruited at soup kitchens and shelters in New York City, to unwittingly lend their Medicaid cards to a ring of doctors who rang up almost $7 million in phony bills. What the “Medicaid people”- the homeless people- got out of this was a pair of shoes.
