TJC students to offer free dental preventative care for East Texas kids

TYLER, Texas — Young children will be able to receive free dental preventative care soon from Tyler Junior College dental hygiene and dental assisting students.

On Nov. 8, TJC Dental Studies Department will host Apache Smiles for kids ages 4 to 11 at the clinic at the Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center on the TJC central campus. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

TJC dental hygiene professor Christina Horton says this event allows East Texas children the chance to get affordable treatment and TJC students the chance to practice their skills.

“So it’s an opportunity for students from whatever school district they choose to come from, to come in. You know, we’re able to waive that $20 fee that we typically charge, which hopefully, maybe they can put that $20 in their gas tank and get their kiddos to the clinic and back home and again,” Horton said.

Some of the services at the clinic will be routine preventive care like evaluations, sealants and fluoride treatments.

Horton says the event is by appointment only and space is limited. Forms to schedule an appointment can be found at tjc.edu/apachesmiles.
