Unit recovers $125K in Medicaid fraud from South Carolinians

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WPDE) — A Medicaid Recipient Fraud Unit recently recovered just under $125,000 in fraudulently obtained Medicaid benefits from two people in South Carolina.

One person is from the Charleston County area and the second person is in the York County area. Their names will not be released due to HIPPA privacy rules.

Officials said the suspects completed applications and/or annual review forms in order to get Medicaid benefits and intentionally misled the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services by under-reporting their income in order to receive benefits.

After the investigation, the suspects agreed to repay $50,000 and $73,420.15 which were received on May 20 and May 24. When the payments were received, the funds were returned to the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which administers the Medicaid program.
