The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine plans to open its third training center to boost the dental workforce and increase dental care accessibility, Penn Live reported June 9.
The dental school is partnering with Hyndman Area Health Centers and Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center to open a regional training center in Johnstown, Pa. The center will train general practice dental residents, dental hygienists and dental assistants.
The center follows two others being constructed in Titusville and Bradford, Pa., which are set to open in July 2026.
The new center will be housed at Hyndman Area Health Centers, allowing patients to receive medical and dental care in the same space.
Nearly 2 million Pennsylvania residents live in dental shortage areas, according to Marnie Oakley, DMD, dean of the dental school.
Residents will begin seeing dental patients in July 2027.
