A South Texas doctor has been indicted on charges that he prescribed opioid painkillers to two patients without legitimate medical reasons, resulting in their deaths.
A federal grand jury in Del Rio added the charges last week against Alfonso Luevano, 50, a Carrizo Springs doctor with multiple offices throughout Southwest Texas, according to federal and state officials.
Luevano, 50, and one of his employees were first charged in May on a multitude of counts, but the new charges against the physician now have him facing a potentially longer prison sentence if he’s convicted of the two new counts of distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death.
Donnie Oliver Tollett says
I’m forever saddened from all of this. This has totally destroyed my family because my wife was one of these patients. If I could only turn back time and save her life. This is something that I battle with everyday. It’s been almost two years now and it feels like yesterday. 😢
